10 Days to Go until Sochi 2014

At 20:14 on 28th January, the OMEGA countdown clocks, located in nine Russian cities, struck 10 days to go until the XXII Olympic Winter Games in Sochi. It started the final countdown to Russia’s first Olympic Winter Games.

Twelve winter sports events (three mixed events, four men’s events and five women’s events) will make their debuts on the Olympic programme in Sochi:

Ski halfpipe – Men’s and Women’s, Ski slopestyle – Men’s and Women’s, Snowboard slopestyle – Men’s and Women’s, Snowboard parallel slalom – Men’s and Women’s, Women’s ski jumping – Women’s, Biathlon mixed relay – Mixed, Figure skating team event – Mixed, Luge team relay – Mixed.

The XXII Olympic Winter Games in Sochi will take place between February 7, 2014 and February 23, 2014 encapsulating 17 days of competitions. 98 events will be held in seven Olympic Winter sports (Skiing, Skating, Luge, Biathlon, Ice Hockey, Curling, and Bobsleigh).
Sochi was elected as the host city for the XXII Olympic Winter Games at the 119th IOC Session in Guatemala City on 4 July 2007.

The "mountain cluster" of venues that will be used during the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games is located in Krasnaya Polyana, approximately 40km from Sochi. The newly-built mountain venues will be home to all the skiing and sliding sports during the Games.
The Rosa Khutor Alpine Resort is located at the Aibga Ridge. It is a single venue and will host all Alpine Skiing disciplines: Downhill, Combined (downhill and slalom), Giant Slalom and the Super Giant Slalom. The total length of the competition tracks is 20 km.
All slopes were developed by Bernard Russi, a world-renowned ski architect from the International Ski Federation (FIS). Sochi will have an excellent selection of world-class tracks for athletes from around the world to train and compete on.
"Rosa Khutor" is a unique alpine resort located in the Krasnaya Polyana district. The name originates from the geographical name "Rosa Khutor", covering approximately 1,820 ha of Aibga Ridge slopes rising above the Mzymta River. The alpine resort is already a major alpine skiing center in the Northern Caucasus region and has played host to several major international competitions.
