With Valentine’s Day on a Monday this year, resorts are making a weekend of it with three days of special love-in events. Here are Skiinfo’s 10 favourites:
Ski Around A Heart-Shape Wood, Grossarltal, Austria (picture attached)
If you're looking for something a little more unusual, legend (or at least the resort's marketing office) has it that a lift attendant in the Austrian resort of Grossarltal carved a small wood in to the shape of a heart between pistes 3 and 5 in hour of all the young ladies who returned to visit him each year. It's not known if the lift attendant is still there (and how he's looking these days if he is), but you can still ski around the wood.
Free Sparkling Wine, Kitzbuhel, Austria
Kitzbuhel has designated Monday, 14 February ‘Ladies Day' so not only do female skiers and boarders get 25% off their day's lift pass, they also receive a coupon to enjoy a free glass of Prosecco in the sunshine (hopefully) on the terrace of Hochkitzbühel or Pengelstein restaurants.
Roses + Champagne, Arc 1950 , France
Of course, nobody does romance like the French, and Arc 1950 inn Les Arcs, France has something for both established couples and those looking for love. Established couples can look forward to receiving roses and champagne in their accommodation in the village while everyone else can try speed dating on the slow, romantic two-seat wooden chairlift that passes over the village. If you click in 15 minutes you're probably set for life. Otherwise ski down to the bottom and ride up again with someone else.
Free Skiing, Les Diablerets, Switzerland
Although the strength of the Swiss Franc can be a heart-breaker for those living outside the country, Les Diablerets has the answer this Valentine's Day. Nothing quite says "I love you" to a skier or boarder than a free lift ticket, and that's just what the resort is offering couples on the 14th with a buy-one, get-one-free offer. Even better there's a free gift too.
Fall Over and Possibly In Love Nevis Range, Scotland
Anyone who has never actually skied or boarded before has the chance to fall over, and possible fall in love, at a special singles learn-to-ski-or-board promotion on Valentine's Day at Nevis Range ski area near Fort William in the Scottish Highlands. The ‘Learn to Ski' package for £45 includes rentals, ticket and tuition. With heart rates sure to be up and the views over Scotland's West Coast awe inspiring, it's a great chance to find love, or at least learn to ski. However "Singles should remember that clothing should be warm and waterproof, rather than slinky or suggestive", warns manager Davie Austin.
Get Married, Loveland, Colorado , USA
Nothing quite says "I love you" like actually getting married, and Loveland ski area has both the name and the opportunity when it stages its 20th annual "Marry me and ski for free" promotion at high noon on Valentine's day. Get married or re-new your vows at the mass participation ceremony led by Harry Heilman, Registered Minister with the Universal Life Church, and not only do you get a lifetime of happiness, but also a free lift ticket (when you buy one)
Chairlift Speed Dating, Okemo Mountain, Vermont, USA
Speed-dating on chairlifts is being offered by an ever increasing number of resorts. Simply join a ‘singles' line to board the chairlift and the matchmaking skills of the lift attendants will pair you up with another single. You have about five minutes to ‘click' as you ride up the Black Ridge Triple Chair. If the magic fails to materialise, simply ski or board down and re-join the "Looking for Love Line" again.
Love Poetry Contest On Giant Heart Shaped Cookies, Squaw Valley, California, USA
Squaw's guests can either enter the poetry contest or buy a giant heart-shaped cookies with a short, personal poem inscribed in icing for their loved ones for $10. The winner will be announced during the full moon on February 18.
Massage for Two, Whistler Blackcomb, British Columbia, Canada
"Our intimate Duo Swedish massage shows your partner their wellbeing is at the top of your mind", says Annique Aird, General Manager of the resort's Scandinave Spa, "The relaxation and tranquility of the spa is a unique experience you can share with someone you love".
Spot Your Opposite Number, Mt Sutton , Quebec, Canada
On Sunday February 13th, everyone on the slopes at Mont Sutton in Canada's Quebec, can get a numbered heart for a voluntary contribution. During the day they need to look for the person wearing the same number as themselves. Find that person before 4pm and win a prize. All monies raised goes to a local Women's Cancer Centre.
