Pirena 2009

Last saturday 17 PIRENA 2009 started. Pirena is an international sleddog crossing-race and one of the most outstanding in the world. During 15 days (17-31 January) men and dogs will cross the Pyrenees, a natural border between Spain, Andorra and France, from West to East (Itinerary). In the magnificent frame La Partacua and the marvellous mountains of Telera and Tendeñera dominating the natural scenery in the Pyrenees of Aragon the 400 dogs and the 33 mushers started the way which will lead them to reach La Molina in fifteen days crossing an important part of The Pyrenees.
Pirena 2009– Grand Prix Affinity Advance is one of the races that count for the International Sled dog Sports Federation –IFSS- World Cup. Pirena also counts for the European Sled dog Racing Association –ESDRA- Europe Cup.
Pirena Director, Pep Parés, is the vice-president of the IFSS (International Federation of Sleddog Sports), where also is the Spanish responsible. With this responsibility, Pep Parés had started a campaign to collect signatures to make this sport recognised by the IOC (International Olympic Committee). This initiative had the support of a lot of people around the world. 37 countries from five continents have yet representation in the International Federation. The goal is to converting the mushing in an Olympic sport in 5 years.
